Ground source heat pumps

Ground source heat pumps are a form of renewable technology that take low-temperature heat from the ground outside and transfer it into a higher temperature through a heat exchanger to provide a low carbon form of space heating and hot water for your home.

• How do they work?

The heat from the ground can be collected in different ways. The most common is a closed-loop system where a sealed loop of pipe is buried either horizontally in a shallow trench or vertically in a borehole. An antifreeze and water solution is pumped through the pipe loop where energy (heat) is
transferred from the ground to the heat pump refrigerant via a heat exchanger in the heat pump.

This then undergoes a refrigeration vapour compression cycle inside the heat pump. The cooled fluid then returns to the ground for the process to start again. The heat in heat pump is then used for space heating or hot water.
